How to calculate your net worth
Net worth = total assets − total debts
In the calculator’s default example, a 35-year-old owns $460,000 in assets, including a $350,000 home, $60,000 in retirement accounts and $25,000 in cash and investments. They owe $301,000, mostly a $260,000 mortgage. Their net worth is $159,000, slightly above the $155,600 median for families aged 35 to 44.
What counts as an asset
- Cash and savings: checking, savings, money market accounts and CDs.
- Investments: brokerage accounts, stocks, bonds, funds and crypto.
- Retirement accounts: 401(k), 403(b), IRA and similar accounts. Use the current balance.
- Home and real estate: what your home and any other property would sell for today, not what you paid.
- Vehicles and other assets: what your cars, valuables and business interests would sell for.
What counts as a debt
Include the current balance on your mortgage and home equity loans, student loans, car loans, credit cards, personal loans and any medical or other debts. Don’t include monthly bills like rent or utilities, since they aren’t money you already owe.
Average net worth by age
The Federal Reserve released its 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances on October 9, 2026. Here’s family net worth by the age of the head of household:
| Age | Median net worth | Average net worth |
|---|---|---|
| Under 35 | $33,000 | $135,400 |
| 35 to 44 | $155,600 | $681,900 |
| 45 to 54 | $253,700 | $1,244,500 |
| 55 to 64 | $411,900 | $1,878,000 |
| 65 to 74 | $431,300 | $1,897,600 |
| 75 or older | $504,900 | $1,962,200 |
| All families | $215,900 | $1,241,500 |
Median net worth for all families rose 2% from 2022 to 2025 after adjusting for inflation, to $215,900. Families headed by someone under 35 saw their median fall about 23% over the same period.
Median vs. average net worth
The median is the middle family: half have more and half have less. The average is pulled up by a small number of very wealthy households, which is why it’s several times higher than the median in every age group. The median is a better guide to where a typical family stands.
Why your net worth matters
- It shows your real financial progress. Income tells you what comes in, but net worth shows what you’ve actually kept.
- It reveals how much of your wealth you can use. In the example, $90,000 of the $159,000 is home equity, which is hard to tap without selling or borrowing. Only $25,000 is in cash and investments.
- It helps you track trends. Calculating it once or twice a year shows whether you’re moving in the right direction.
How to grow your net worth
- Pay off high-interest debt first. Every dollar of credit card debt you clear raises your net worth by a dollar and saves interest. Plan it with our debt payoff calculator.
- Save and invest consistently. See how regular deposits add up with our compound interest calculator.
- Use your employer’s retirement match and check whether you’re on track with our retirement calculator.
- Build an emergency fund so surprise expenses don’t go on a credit card. Our savings goal calculator shows how much to set aside each month.
- Be careful with things that lose value. Cars usually lose value every year, so a large car loan can lower your net worth even as you pay it down.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my net worth?
Add up the current value of everything you own, including cash, investments, retirement accounts, your home and vehicles. Then subtract everything you owe, such as your mortgage, student loans, car loans and credit card balances. The result is your net worth.
What is the median net worth in the U.S.?
The median net worth for all U.S. families was $215,900 in 2025, according to the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Finances. The average was about $1.24 million, pulled up by the wealthiest households.
What is a good net worth at 35?
The median net worth for families headed by someone aged 35 to 44 was $155,600 in 2025. For those under 35, it was $33,000. Being near or above the median for your age is a reasonable benchmark.
Should I include my home in my net worth?
Yes. Include your home’s current market value as an asset and your mortgage balance as a debt. The difference is your home equity. It’s also useful to look at your net worth without your home, since home equity is hard to spend.
Is it bad to have a negative net worth?
It’s common early in a career, especially with student loans or a new car loan. Focus on paying down high-interest debt and building savings, and your net worth should turn positive over time.
